Armstrong Student Wins Big Sister of the Year
(April 5, 2012) Tiffany Edmond, an Armstrong senior majoring in fitness management, was named Big Sister of the Year as part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Coastal Empire program.
“It’s a shocker. I don’t really like the spotlight, so it’s kind of weird for me to have a ‘Big Sister of the Year’ title,” Edmond said. “But it’s okay, because I love it. I would encourage anyone to do it. Some kids don’t have a positive figure in their lives, so they need someone they can look up to, someone they can talk to outside of their family and their surroundings.”
Edmond and her “Little Sister” Taylor were matched in 2009, bringing together self-described book worms and board game champs. They soon found out that they had a lot more in common.
“We like a lot of the same things,” Edmond said. “We like the same cartoons, like SpongeBob. We like the same movies, colors, foods, to go shopping, things like that.”
Edmond talks her little sister through encounters with bullies and encourages her to focus on schoolwork. She also strives to give Taylor the confidence to believe in herself.
“Tiffany is there for me when I need someone to talk to,” Taylor wrote in her nomination letter. “She helps me feel better about myself, especially when the other kids say bad things about my hand. When I was six-years old, I burned my hand trying to make bath water. Tiffany tells me not to listen to what people say, and it makes me feel better.”
“Tiffany is the best Big Sister in the entire program. She is nice, kind and a good person. Tiffany feels just like my real big sister,” Taylor said.
